In the competitive world of e-commerce, understanding intent is the key to conversion. When a customer adds an item to their wishlist, they are giving you a high-signal indicator of future purchase intent. However, without a real-time Wishlist Sync, that valuable data often sits dormant in your database. By syncing the “Add to Wishlist” event directly to your marketing automation platform like Klaviyo, you bridge the gap between interest and action. This integration allows you to move beyond generic newsletters and deliver hyper-personalized, timely communications that resonate with your customers’ specific desires, significantly boosting your ROI and long-term brand loyalty.
To start syncing your “Add to Wishlist” data to Klaviyo for automation, follow these steps:
Step 1: Generate a Klaviyo Private API Key
Because this integration happens securely between our servers and Klaviyo, a Private API Key is required.
- Log in to your Klaviyo Dashboard.
- Click on your Organization Name in the bottom left, then go to Settings > API Keys. Alternatively, you may directly visit this link to grab the API key.
- Click the Create Private API Key button.
- Provide a relevant name to the key, for e.g. “Smart Wishlist Sync”.
- Important: Select “Full Access” (or Custom Access with Full Access to Profiles and Events) so the app has permission to sync data.
- Copy the key (it will start with pk_).
Step 2: Configure the Integration
Now, head back to Smart Wishlist Settings from Shopify Admin.
- Visit Apps> Smart Wishlist > Labs (you can find it at top-right in the settings)
- Navigate to the Klaviyo integration page.
- Toggle the Enable Klaviyo Integration switch to ON.
- Paste your Private API Key into the designated field.
- Customize your Event Name: By default, it is “Added to Wishlist,” but you can change this to match your brand (e.g., “Add to Love List”).
- Note: This is the name you will look for when setting up your Flows in Klaviyo.
- Ensure the Sync this event checkbox is checked.
Step 3: Test and Save
Before finalizing, let’s make sure the connection is active.
- Click the Send Test Event button.
- If successful, you will see a green checkmark. You can also verify this in Klaviyo by going to Analytics > Metrics and looking for your event name.
- Click Update Settings to save your configuration.
✅ What happens next?
- Real-time Sync: Our system will now automatically push a data point to Klaviyo every time a customer adds an item to their wishlist.
- Automation: You can now create automation like “Wishlist Abandonment Flow” in Klaviyo using your custom event as the trigger to re-engage shoppers who haven’t purchased their favorite items yet.

“If you change your Event Name later, remember to update your Klaviyo Flow triggers to match the new name, otherwise, the flow will stop sending emails.”
